Renaissance Man (Week 20)

皆さんこんにちは! Another great week in Japan! This past week we had my first Zone Conference, and it was great! A lot is about to change in the everyday life of a missionary including daily schedule and reporting stats. More info on that soon to come! This past zone meeting happened to be the last for three missionaries in the Fujisawa zone including one of our zone leaders, Elder Leach, who is from Texas. Because this is their last, they were asked to bear a final testimony before going
home. Elder Leach's testimony was particularly inspiring to me. He talked a little bit about becoming a "Renaissance Man". He said a Renaissance Man is basically a Jack of all Trades, and in order to
become a Renaissance Man, Elder Leach would talk to everyone and learn something from every person. He said that when he was younger, he devised a plan for his life and how he would become a Renaissance Man; college, career, wife, how many kids, vehicle, retirement, everything. When he was called to Japan he was excited about learning Japanese and the career options that would open up. He said that his reason for serving a mission wasn't the best reason, but it was good enough to
get him out here. He said that as he has served and learned, he realized that Christ was nowhere in his plan and as he has been away from everything his plan has crumbled to the ground. I think there is
an important lesson to be learned there. He says now that he has reached the end of his mission and is about to return home, he still doesn't really know what he will do, but he does know that Christ will
be the center. Elder Leach's testimony was truly one of the most amazing I have heard. I know that I have received some revelation and new insights from it, and I hope that you can receive some as well
from my condensed version in this email.

We don't have much time to write today so I apologize for the short email, but don't worry! You haven't missed much. Just hours and hours of working our hardest to bring others unto Christ. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity and I am beyond grateful for my friends and family back home. Keep being amazing! 皆さん愛しています!

Happy Easter! (Week 31)

Hello everyone! Hope everyone is having a great Easter! This is not really a weekly email and I will get straight to the point. This past week has definitely been an eventful one. Last Friday, I was diagnosed with this thing called Bell's Palsy. Scary. Last Wednesday, the right side of my lip was feeling a little weird and by Thursday , I lost all control of the muscle in the right side of my face. On Friday , I received a priesthood blessing and went to the doctor to get it checked out. It was definitely an expensive day. Had to see a nerve specialist, get a MRI and all that fun stuff. The bad news is, I have zero control of the muscle in the right side of my face and I'm on some meds for this week. Good news is, in a couple months I should be all good. Apparently it is due to a bit of a virus I've had recently on top of the stresses of being a missionary and that caused a bit of minor nerve damage. So I'm sorry in advance for all of my pics with no smiles in them thes

MTC Week 5

Hey everyone! I hope everyone is having a great week! This week in the MTC has been great! Last Wednesday we got our new kohai (1st 3 week missionaries). They are great, and remind me a lot of when I first came in. Time really flies! We will be dai-senpai (3rd 3 week missionaries) in 6 days . [Note from Barry:  I looked up the translation of kohai, senpai, and dai-senpai.  Here's what I gather:  Missionaires going to Japan are in the MTC for about 9 weeks.  Every 3 weeks a new group of missionaries to Japan comes in. kohai = junior student (first 3 weeks in the MTC) senpai = advanced student or upperclassman (2nd 3 weeks in the MTC) dai = great or big, so dai-senpai = the most senior students (last 3 weeks)] Last Friday marked our one month mark. Only 23 left in the mission, and time is just getting faster and faster. Saturday marked our half way point in our MTC experience. The first 2 or 3 weeks were rough, but these past few have been great. The five other eld

The Beginning of the End ⛩ (Week 97)

Have you ever just walked outside and been like, wow, you know, it’s really really hot out here and it probably can’t get any hotter than this? And then you walk out the next day and realize it got even hotter... We’ll, if I had to sum up our week this past week, that’s how I’d describe it. Hachioji truly is 太陽の町. It’s been rough, but we’re hanging in there and having some fun along the way. In other news, this past week was transfers, and there has been some major changes. First off, I’m still here in Hachioji (blessings from Heaven), but Elder Gill transferred to my old area Yokosuka, and my new companion is the one and only Elder Matsunaga from Yamaguchi-Ken. On top of that, our zone has doubled in size and now we cover the entire Machida Stake rather than just the western half. Yea, I just thought last transfer was busy. We’ve been running around like chickens with our heads cut off working with Stake leaders, organizing all our districts, planning zone conference, and coordinatin
