MTC Week 3

Hey everyone! Where to start? Week 3 was great! It flew by! The end of last week was frustrating but over this conference weekend, I was able feel the spirit so strongly. This week has been really good so far! I have been on a roll with the language and our investigator lessons have gone really well! Hopefully I can keep up the streak! My district has completed week 3 in the MTC so we have officially graduated from freshman year in the MTC. We are officially senpai now! Our dai-senpai left to Japan on Monday. We miss them already. They are going to be amazing missionaries. I really grew close to a couple of them. Nettleton Chōrō was one of those. He and I are very  alike, with a good sense of humor! Another one was McDonald Chōrō. He trained in Taekwondo all the way up until he left for his mission. We got the chance to spar a couple times and run through forms together. I didn't realize how much I missed it! And McDonald Chōrō is going to Tokyo South, so we might be companions one day!

I really enjoyed all your emails about conference. One talk that stood out to me was Elder Bednar's talk about coming to know the Savior. I have always been a huge fan of Elder Bednar and this week was no exception. I particularly enjoyed the part in his talk about the 12 apostles conversion story of becoming fishers of men. When the Savior first sought out disciples, he found many, but all but twelve left him. After seeing the other leave, the Savior asks the twelve, will ye leave me also? And the apostles say, Lord, to whom will we go? Not only did the apostles leave everything they knew to become disciples, but they were all in. They were completely dedicated to the service. Obviously, I was able to draw several parallels between his talk and my life. It's not enough just to say, Lord I will follow thee. We have to be all in. We have to be actively engaged in the work of the Lord.

I'm glad to hear things are going well at home! I hope that as I serve my mission in Japan, my family at home will serve their mission through the miracle of LifeVantage! I am working extra hard at teaching and talking to as many people as I can. I hope everyone at home is working just as hard to bring the second greatest message (LifeVantage) to the world! Let our LV family know that I love them, and to never take what they have for granted! I look forward to the day when I arrive at the Birmingham airport and ride home in that Jeep with a big LV on the side! I'm counting on y'all! Go make great things happen!

Thank you for all the loving and supportive emails! For those who have never been on a mission, you will never know how much we look forward to receiving emails from home! All the care packages are great as well! One thing though, please don't worry about sending anymore food (at least while I'm in the MTC that is!). We have tons and tons of snacks in our room, and they feed us pretty well in the cafeteria. What has been sent is much appreciated though!

We have not heard from any apostles at the MTC yet, but my hopes are high! Just last night, we heard from the General Relief Society President and her husband. They both gave great talks about the mantle of a missionary. He related the mantle to a jacket. They spoke about how when we first become missionaries, we don't really fit the mantle, but every time we knock on a door or teach a lesson or get up at 6:30 or tract in the cold, we are lifting spiritual weights and eventually that mantle will start to fit. And in two years when we get home, with tears in our eyes, we will remove that tag with The Savior Jesus Christ's name from over our hearts. And what we have become will be all that's left. I wish I could convey the power of that talk over email. They were truly amazing.

To everyone at home, I love you! I think sometimes about how hard a mission is, and then about the missionaries out there with no support from home. I can not imagine how difficult that must be. I am so thankful for my family and the love and support they show me. I miss you all tons, but the Lord has a great work for me to do, and could never live with the guilt of not serving the Lord for two years after everything He has done for me. I know it will be over before any of us know it. Again I love you all so much! Go make great things happen!
Smile at someone, hold a door, pay for a meal for the person in line behind you. Where much has been given, much is required! And our family has been given much!

I love you all so much!

P.S. On Sunday we got to hear from BYU's a cappella group Vocal Point! They were so amazing! The songs they sang were absolutely beautiful. I would definitely recommend looking up a few of their songs and a couple of their back stories! They are all returned missionaries and only one of the nine members studies music. They all had wonderful testimonies! Give them a look and a shout out!

Happy Easter! (Week 31)

Hello everyone! Hope everyone is having a great Easter! This is not really a weekly email and I will get straight to the point. This past week has definitely been an eventful one. Last Friday, I was diagnosed with this thing called Bell's Palsy. Scary. Last Wednesday, the right side of my lip was feeling a little weird and by Thursday , I lost all control of the muscle in the right side of my face. On Friday , I received a priesthood blessing and went to the doctor to get it checked out. It was definitely an expensive day. Had to see a nerve specialist, get a MRI and all that fun stuff. The bad news is, I have zero control of the muscle in the right side of my face and I'm on some meds for this week. Good news is, in a couple months I should be all good. Apparently it is due to a bit of a virus I've had recently on top of the stresses of being a missionary and that caused a bit of minor nerve damage. So I'm sorry in advance for all of my pics with no smiles in them thes

MTC Week 5

Hey everyone! I hope everyone is having a great week! This week in the MTC has been great! Last Wednesday we got our new kohai (1st 3 week missionaries). They are great, and remind me a lot of when I first came in. Time really flies! We will be dai-senpai (3rd 3 week missionaries) in 6 days . [Note from Barry:  I looked up the translation of kohai, senpai, and dai-senpai.  Here's what I gather:  Missionaires going to Japan are in the MTC for about 9 weeks.  Every 3 weeks a new group of missionaries to Japan comes in. kohai = junior student (first 3 weeks in the MTC) senpai = advanced student or upperclassman (2nd 3 weeks in the MTC) dai = great or big, so dai-senpai = the most senior students (last 3 weeks)] Last Friday marked our one month mark. Only 23 left in the mission, and time is just getting faster and faster. Saturday marked our half way point in our MTC experience. The first 2 or 3 weeks were rough, but these past few have been great. The five other eld

What’s up everybody!? It’s been week. Lots of ups, plenty of downs, but always a good time. Elder Gill and I have been running around like chickens with our heads cut off this past week and this coming week doesn’t look any less busy but we’ve been making the most. Apparently Hachioji is also know as the city of the sun. And let me tell you, the moment we step outside the apartment everyday, I am reminded why. We’ve been in 30’s (like 90ish in Fahrenheit I think) all week and wearing a button down with a tie and collar definitely doesn’t help. Either way though, we are working hard to stay healthy, stay genki, and keep our dendo fire burning warmer than the temperature outside. We’ve got plans to hit up Tama Zoo today, so I don’t have too much time to write, but I’ll make sure to take some pics. Also have a zone blitz here in Hachioji tonight so we’re excited for that. Miracles are just waiting around the corner! Well, that’s about all folks. Hope everyone has a good w
