MTC Week 8

Well, this will be my last email home from the United States of America. We got our flight plans last Friday and will be flying out early Monday morning, but because of time differences, we won't get to Japan until Tuesday afternoon. We will be flying from Salt Lake City to Portland and then to Tokyo. I am super excited to be teaching the people of Japan. I have definitely loved my MTC experience; there has been very mixed emotions as we prepare to leave this week. Sometimes I feel as if I am not ready to teach those in Japan (especially in Japanese), but I have to remember that its not me that does the teaching, the spirit teaches, we are just the messengers. This last week, we taught two of our investigators for the last time, it was very difficult to say goodbye. This is the part of the mission that no one warns you about!

Sunday was fantastic. Jones Chōrō and I got to bless the sacrament in Japanese. It was super cool! Our priesthood and Sunday school lessons were all amazing as well. In our Sunday evening devotional, we heard from Jenny Oaks Baker, a world renowned violinist and the daughter of Elder Dallin H. Oaks. Her entire family is very musically oriented. The oldest daughter (who is about my age) plays the violin as well, the next daughter plays the piano and sings, the next daughter plays the cello, and the 9 year old son plays the acoustic guitar. They all performed several beautiful musical numbers together. It was really awesome to see such a tightly nit and musically oriented family. Reminds me a little bit of home! Her husband served his mission in Japan and talked to us in Japanese for a minute when he spoke. It was really awesome.

In our Tuesday evening devotional, we heard from the General Primary President, Joy D. Jones. She and her husband gave fantastic talks on our divine heritage and the amazing opportunity we have to serve as missionaries. There was a lot of talk about obedience and how important it is. It was said that any missionary can walk a street and knock on doors; a good missionary is determined by his obedience. We are given a lot of rules/guidelines as missionaries, but every rule has a purpose. I have seen first hand the blessings that come from obedience. As I have strived to be more obedient, my learning as a missionary has been hastened and everything just runs a lot smoother. Through our obedience we will be able to maximize our potential as missionaries and as children of God.

I am excited to see what the future holds, for me and for the United States. I have done a lot of scripture study recently and received a lot of comfort from them. I would encourage everyone to do the same and you will find comfort and answers to your questions and concerns. I know that as we are striving to live worthily and are doing our best, everything will work out just fine. It won't always work out the way we think it should, and often times it will be very difficult, but the Lord has a plan. We need to trust in it.

I love my family at home so much! I miss you all very much, but a glorious work is commencing and I have a role to play in it. My goal as a missionary is to bring even just one soul to Christ and to being able to receive an eternal family in the temple like mine has. And if my joy be great with one soul, how great shall my joy be should I bring many unto the Savior! I am beyond excited to hit the streets and go to work! Tokyo here I come!
To everyone at home, 愛しています!!!

Little America (Week 24)

Another week of miracles in Japan! Not much time to write today, but that's okay because everything eventful that happened this week, happened within a span of like 2 days. So I'll get right to the point. Monday through Thursday was spent doing a lot of streeting and a lot of housing. On Thursday , we had zone meeting. It went really well. I was able to learn a lot and receive some personal revelation for myself as a missionary. Directly after zone meeting, Elder Duke and I got the opportunity to go on splits with the zone leaders, Elder Carrasco (from Mexico) and Elder Gonzales (from Columbia). The cool part is that our zone leaders just so happen to be in the Fussa area (basically tiny America) which is where the Fussa Air Force base is, so we got to talk to a lot of Americans. All of them were also in the Air Force so it was a way cool experience. I hope I will be able to serve in that area one day down the road. Anyway, I will move on to one of the miracles we saw while I...

MTC Week 1

Wednesday September 21, 2016 My p-day in the MTC is every Wednesday so expect emails then. I can read emails any day but I can only reply on p-day. I will admit, the first week of The MTC was really really tough. It was incredibly frustrating trying to learn the language, and trying to adapt to my new, very scheduled lifestyle. Since Sunday, I've been able to settle in a little more though and come to terms with having to be patient with myself as I learn the language and further learn the Gospel. On our second day in the MTC, we received our first investigator, Ohira san, who we have been teaching in Japanese! The first lesson was a total bomb shell, but as we have learned to stop trying to rely on ourselves and our own teaching skill, and start relying on the Spirit to teach, we have seen much success in just these few days. My companion is Jones Chōrō. We are not very much alike at all, but we work well together and generally keep each other in balance. Chab Chōrō is our dis...

Plainer than white bread 🇯🇵⛩ (Week 86)

おはようございます! Hope everyone had a great week! Things haven’t been too interesting over here in this side of the world recently. I think that leadership has two sides to it: a ministering side and an administering side. Elder Jaeckel and I have definitely been able to see the importance of the administrative side this past week. With the beginning of a new transfer, zone conference coming up this week, and the various other leadership meetings we attend, needless to say, things have been pretty busy. Despite all those things though, we have been blessed to be able to get out and see the beauty of the Lord’s vineyard. To start with, we’ve been able to talk to tons of people this week. The Lord is preparing people all the time and it’s always amazing to be led to those people and blessed to see the miracle. One way cool experience that happened this week was with our new homie, Fei. He is from China, fluent in Mandarin, Japanese, and English, and a hustler on the court. So our story begins...
